Default Blue

The design studio helping you build healthier brands.

As co-founder (and the only remaining original founding member), I’ve lead the creative output — for all client-facing projects as well as our own internal design and marketing activities — over the last 20 years or so.

A brief history of Default Blue

I was fresh out of college when I landed my first freelance project back in 2001 — a six-month contract working with a small team of teachers to develop graphics and animations for a GCSE revision tool.

The project was led by a local entrepreneur who recognised the potential of teaming up to create a new design and marketing agency in the local area, with his wife managing the marketing while I lead the design side. That’s essentially how Default Blue was born.

As a recent graduate just dipping his toe into the design industry, this was a dream scenario. Not only did I have a new full-time opportunity, but I also had full creative control. Including coming up with the name (ask me about it if you’re curious at all) and designing, developing and constantly evolving our own brand identity.

The last 20 years have seen the business grow to a team of seven, then (for various reasons) shrink back down again to a core team of two. Now it’s just me and the MD Andrew Stafford, supported by a small team of trusted freelance designers and developers.
