Diversify those income streams
As we rapidly approach the end of the year, there’s one lesson I’m taking into 2026, and that’s to diversify my income streams.
With the festive season suddenly upon us, I imagine most people were no doubt thinking about stopping work. For me, the work just stopped! There's nothing quite like all work completely evaporating 3 weeks before Christmas to help you find time to focus on your website.*
I know it's common for things to slow down towards the end of the year, but this year it came an abrupt halt. And while I’m currently (uncomfortably) positioned somewhere between studio owner and freelancer, this is not what you need when you have a family to feed. I don’t think the kids have tried Turkey Dinosaurs, but we might be serving them up with the sprouts this year!!
It's not all gloom and doom, as there's a nice little project to start (what's left of) this final week, along with the ultimate irony of having plenty scheduled in the new year from variety of different sources. I realise there are so many other creatives out there in a similar (or worse) situation than this, so I’m acutely aware that I've been fortunate enough to have had a few good months, so between my wife and I Christmas is pretty much paid for. We just need to somehow get through this sticky spot.
I’m confident we will get through it, and when we do I’m going to make it my mission to define and optimise these income streams — including finding ways to finish, launch and monitise the side projects I’ve had on the back burner for far too long.
I guess this sounds a bit like a new years resolution, but one I’m determined to see through the rest of next year… and beyond.
* During this time I’ve made plenty of updates and additions to the website, not just this insightful and engaging series of thought-provoking posts, but also a selection of past Projects, a bit more about me on my Profile page, a glimpse into the inner workings of my mind through my #BrandRadio Playlist and a good look at some of the other creative work I’ve done over the years that never realised their full Potential.
So come on in, have a scroll and explore to your hearts content.
